With only a couple of days to go until Worcester Music Festival 2010 begins, we thought we’d devote this newsletter to telling you just a little about some of the activities that you can enjoy over the weekend…

**Worcester Music Festival – how it works

We have around 230 live performances taking place in 27 venues in the city centre from 7pm on Friday 20th through to 11pm on Sunday 22nd August. Nearly all of these are free entry but a few workshops and a couple of gigs do have a charge on the door.

The Festival Guide contains details of what’s going on where and when, along with a summary of the type of music being played by each band. You can get your copy at any venue, the Tourist Information Centre in Worcester, or the café at Worcester Arts Workshop. Also, do visit the online What’s On guide at www.worcestermusicfestival.co.uk/whatson

Music Festival organisers will be at Worcester Arts Workshop all weekend, and we’re aiming for all day unplugged live music from a series of buskers in the café. If you want to find out what bands are worth seeing, want to pick up a spare gig listing, or just want to sit and have a coffee and a chat – come and say hello! The Arts Workshop is on Sansome Street, (opposite the job centre).

**Poetry, spoken word events at Worcester Music Festival – because it’s not JUST about music!

We are happy to be working with The Phonic Room – Worcester’s new platform for spoken word, providing performance space/time to local (and national) poets, comedians, writers, actors and performance artists of all kinds. They are hosting two events this weekend, and you can view details of the events here:

*The Worcester Music Festival Phonic Room – Poets and stories at Boston Tea Party on Friday 20th August from 7pm until 10pm: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=104995722891484

*The Phonic Room Free Mic – The Phonic Room, but with a rhythm section… and maybe a few musical treats… Severn View Hotel on Sunday 22nd August from 7pm until 11pm: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=109876082399361

**Something for Everybody

With so many gigs and fantastic performers playing at the Festival this weekend, we couldn’t possibly recommend any one over the other but for a good cross-section of the music on offer you may wish to check out the following links:

*On Friday 20th August from 7.30pm Worcester Arts Workshop and Lockjaw Records will play host to 3 excellent hardcore bands: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=144120508950723&ref=ts

*Fedheadz Promotions presents a night of awesome live music with 6 local bands playing at The Pheasant on Friday 20th August from 7.30pm: www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/event.php?eid=122715821108653

*Come along and relax in the company of 5 fabulous female performers at the Art House Café in Crowngate on Saturday 21st August from 7pm until 11pm: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=129488050425378

*Sunday 22nd August from 4pm sees the Driver Promotions Alldayer at The Firefly, Lowesmoor featuring 9 fab bands: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=115506521830699&ref=mf

**Families at Worcester Music Festival

Over the weekend there will be several activities suitable for children and young adults. In addition to the events being listed below, many of the venues hosting our performers are open to under 18s up to certain times – please check the listings for more details.

*Ukulele!
Open to all ages is Steven Sproat’s ukulele workshop at the Elgar School of Music. If you don’t own a uke you can borrow one on the day. This workshop costs £30 and runs on Saturday from 10am to 3:30pm. To book your place call Worcester Live 01905 611427.

*Join a Rock Band – no musical experience needed!
Ever dreamed of joining a rock band but never even played an instrument? If you want to try singing, playing guitar / bass or drums then this is the place to be. Worcester School of Rock & Performance will provide all the instruments and coaching, you just need to turn up and have a go. This is open to ages 8 to 18 years and is free. Runs on Saturday from 11am to 2pm at the City Youth Centre, Spring Gardens.

*Singing
On Saturday Helen Russell is running a series of singing sessions suitable for all ages at St Swithun’s Institute. From 2pm to 2:45pm is Helen’s ‘All Stars Singing’ session suitable for children aged 2 and up; from 3pm to 3:45pm there is the ‘Popstars Singing and Dancing’ aimed at older children; and from 5pm to 6pm is the Worcester Music Festival Community Choir – perfect for those who have never sung outside the shower!
Free entry but to guarantee your place please e-mail info@worcestermusicfestival.co.uk

*Rappers and Lyricists open mic session
On Saturday evening there is a Rappers and Lyricists open mic session being held at Boston Tea Party on Broad Street from 8pm to 9pm. This will suit teenagers and upwards. So if you’re an aspiring rapper or lyricist please come along and join in! Free entry.

*Worcester Young Musician’s Showcase
Young musicians from Worcester and beyond will showcase their talents here. There will be a mixture of acoustic performances and band performances. Come along and see the future of music in Worcestershire!
This event is being run in association with Energy Factory and Youthcomm Radio 106.7 FM.
Come and see how good our young local musicians are! This event takes place at the City Youth Centre, Spring Gardens from 3pm to 6pm – entry is free.

So it’s clear from just this email how much great stuff there is going on this weekend… Wherever you end up, don’t forget to take your camera if you want to get involved in the Photo competition (for more info, visit: www.worcestermusicfestival.co.uk/info/photocompetition)

As always, any questions, please email us on info@worcestermusicfestival.co.uk

Worcester Music Festival: Friday 20th – Sunday 22nd August 2010

Hi and welcome to the latest newsletter from the team behind Worcester Music Festival. We have only two weeks to go now so it’s a bit like the calm before the storm here at Festival HQ. We just can’t wait to get out and about and watch some of the 230 performances that will be happening throughout the city over the weekend…!

**Music Festival Warm-Up
What goes better with beer than live music? Nope, we couldn’t think of anything either! So that’s why we’ve persuaded the organisers of Worcester Beer Festival to let us put on some extra special live bands next Thursday (12th) for the Beer Festival opening night! We will treat you to a live set from Stuntdog, Tallulah Fix and Calm Like A Riot as a warm-up to the Music Festival which will begin just over a week later. Music Festival organisers will be there too (of course, did I mention there was beer?) so come along and say hello! Visit www.worcesterbeerfest.org.uk for more info.

**Folk events during the Music Festival
There’s something for everyone at Worcester Music Festival and for fans of folk…

Saturday 21st August
- ‘Folk Club’ from 1.00pm to 5.00pm at Tudor House Heritage Centre, Friar Street Worcester featuring: Driftwood, Julia Davies, East West Infusion, Rex Waldron, Deadmoney Duo, Makale, The Rawmarsh Mashers

Sunday 22nd August
- ‘Sunday Extra’ from 1.00pm to 2.00pm at Tudor House Heritage Centre, Friar Street Worcester with Flatworld (the acoustic trio)

- Folk Club Concert from 12.00pm to 2.30pm at The Guildhall, High Street, Worcester featuring: Jennie Harwood, Loxley, Ouj’a, Foxtail Soup, Eric and Eileen Payne. This will be followed at 4.30pm by a special one hour concert performance from Uiscedwr featuring Anna Esslemont, Cormac Byrne and Nick Waldock..

**V2A’s The Dark Side of Worcester – Saturday 21st August, The Marrs Bar
If you’re into industrial/metal/goth/electro music, or if you’re just into having a great time, this gig promises to be one of the many treats of the Festival weekend. Starting at 6pm, the evening will include gigs from Weak13, Attrition, Kommand & Kontrol, Oak, Deviant and V2A. Last year, V2A’s gig at the Pig n Drum was so popular that the place was overcrowded and there was a party in the street. So get down to this one early if you want to guarantee you’ll see them!

**Demo Derby – Sunday 22nd August, 1pm-3pm, Worcester Arts Workshop
If you’re in a band and have a demo, bring it along to this event and let a panel of experts give you their feedback and advice. Paul White, editor of Sound on Sound magazine will be on the panel along with Scott Garrett from MAS Records and other industry experts.
You’re welcome to just turn up with your demo but in order to guarantee your place, please email info@worcestermusicfestival.co.uk

**‘Gull Film’ Video Draw
There are around 230 live acts playing this year’s Worcester Music Festival. One act will be chosen at random on Monday 23rd August and will be invited to have one of their songs made in to a quality music video by local film makers, Gull Films. We’ll let you know how it goes after the Festival but in the meantime, why not visit Gull Films’ Facebook page here: http://tinyurl.com/gullfilms.

Thanks for reading the latest newsletter. Please feel free to forward this to anyone else you think might be interested – people can sign up at: www.worcestermusicfestival.co.uk/news/newsletter. If you want to get in touch please email us on info@worcestermusicfestival.co.uk.
The Worcester Music Festival Committee x

PS – our brochure is hot off the press. It’s packed full of Festival info, including full band details, workshop details and each day’s line-up. Watch out for them appearing over the next couple of weeks in venues and other public places throughout the city the neighbouring surroundings. They’re free so please pick one up when you see one and share with your friends!

The funeral of Johnny Collins took place at Breakspear Crematorium in Rusilip, West London on Thursday 13th August. The repatriation process from Poland took weeks to be completed, and he wasn't returned to these shores until nearly the end of July.
Suffice to say that the service, and the reception afterwards back in South Pinner at the home of his Herga Folk Club, were totally awesome. Hundreds of people came from near and far to say a final farewell to someone who had played a part (large or small) in their lives. The tributes at the service from his family and closest friends, summed up the man perfectly. The songs selected were, again, perfect for the occasion, and the singing just took your breath away. The reception was, as anticipated, a wonderful celebration of Johnny in song – hours and hours of songs sung in tribute, with wonderfull choruses, harmonies and so much affection.

I just feel humbled to have been a part of that day.

Johnny Collins has been a guest at Bromyard Folk Festival continuously for nearly forty years, so it very sad to have to write that Johhny died from a heart attack on Sunday 5th July in Gdansk Poland. He and Jim Mageean were performing at the shanty festival and had just finished their concert at the Sailor's Club when he was taken ill.

I am sure there are many, many people locally who will remember Johnny for his singing, his friendship and his gentleness. Just a lovely man in so many ways. I count myself fortunate to have been known him, and to have sung in the same room as him on so maay occasions.

Farewll, Johnny – an inspiration and example to everyone.
