Anyone involved with Bromyard Sessions will remember Granny’s Attic playing at the Folk Festival opener in September. They have also been along to several other sessions and Cohen and his dad, Pete, have been regulars for a couple of years now.

So it’s great to see them getting a really prestigious gig just before Christmas supporting the legendary John Kirkpatrick in Worcester. Details below (thanks to JT for these):

Horizon Lights in Concert at Worcester Festival on Thursday 25 August. Venue – Elgar School of Music at 8-00pm. Tickets £4 (to include a drink) from Worcester Live box office (01905 611427). Proceeds to charity.

Well worth seeing. Horizon Lights went down very well at the recent “Hot Day In August” at Moors Meadow so deserve our support for playing their part in a memorable day.

Young Musicians Workshop – “Playing for Dance”

Sun 18^th Sept 11am – 3pm, The Old Town Hall, High St, Weymouth, DT4 8JH

With the opportunity to play for junior Morris dance sides at the Dinosaurs Not Allowed showcase in Weymouth on Sat 24^th September 2011 as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

All portable acoustic instruments welcome. Ability to sight read simple music or learn by ear needed.

There is no cost for the workshop but advance booking required for numbers. Age guideline 12-25 years. Please bring a packed lunch.

Les ‘ot Potatoes

I should have posted this ages ago, but life has a way of getting in the way of good intentions.
Strictly speaking we are not a cajun band. We like to play cajun music, but we have an eclectic repertoire. We play at curry nights at Norri’s Cafe (The Granary) and in pubs in Leominster, and we like to play at music sessions when we can. We are: Ed on guitar, Kay & Jacques (Jakes) on fiddle and Norri on box. Jacques and Norri also play with Bandemonium.

Found a live video of Dempsey’s Lot over the weekend. Filmed at the Roadhouse in Stirchley, Birmingham back in 2004. I vaguely remember the event, think it was around St Patrick’s Night, but hadn’t ever seen the video. To take a look click on the link below:

Portuguese Fado Music

About 10 years ago I had the fascinating job of installing quality control systems for companies who made plastic bottles. The saving grace was that some of my customers were in Portugal and so I spent a lot of time in the Portuguese hinterland, not the Algarve or Lisbon or Oporto but the hinterland, Portugal’s equivalent of the Three Counties.

And the folk music was still alive and vibrant and relevant!

They call it "Fado", pronounced FAR-DOO, and it is latin blues. Emotional, personal, weeping and wailing away!

I left that part of my life behind and the music with it. But I’m finding it again! I’ve been listening tonight to a wonderful Fado singer called Maria do Ceo. It’s more Poozies than Young Tradition but the music is fabulous.

It’s really something special and will remind you that we ain’t the only people with a tradition! (Not that you needed reminding!)
