News from Kevin Sanders - sadly there will not be any more sessions at the Rose and Crown, Shrawley. It’s understood that the pub will be shutting its doors, for good, as from tomorrow (Saturday 7 Jan)!

On a brighter note, following the session on 29th December, we have been offered “The Old Beams” in Stourport on Severn as our “2nd Friday” venue. The inaugural “Friday Session” will take place on 13th January 2012.

Directions (for those who haven’t been before):

From Worcester direction: A449 as far as “Mitre Oak” roundabout. Turn left onto A4025 to Stourport. When you reach Stourport, follow signs for Great Witley A451. Cross the river and take 1^st turn on the left (leisure centre and swimming pool) – Harold Davies Drive, “The Old Beams” is on your right.

From the “Rose and Crown” Shrawley/Holt Heath direction : Continue on the B4196 towards Stourport (approx 5mls/8 kms), and turn right to town centre at “T” junction with A451. Turn right by the pedestrian crossing into Harold Davies Drive (access road to leisure centre and swimming pool),approx 400 metres after joining A451. “The Old Beams” is on your right.

From Birmingham/ Kidderminster direction: Approaching Kidderminster on the A456, go straight over the traffic lights at “Land Oak”. Turn left onto ring road and follow A451 to Stourport and then signs to GreatWitley A451. Take the 1^st turn on the left (leisure centre and swimmingpool), as soon as you have crossed the bridge (by the pedestrian traffic lights), “The Old Beams” is on your right.

2012 Wassails

Sat 7^TH January 2012 Wassail in Much Marcle – Starts 7pm at Weston’s Cider, Much Marcle HR8 2NQ, with a bit of dancing, torchlight procession to Apple Orchard for Wassail, then to the Slip Tavern Inn (food available for purchase) just down the road for a bit more dancing and an unforgettable performance of The Cradley Mummers, followed by a bloody good session – so, again, please bring along any instruments and voices. All monies collected will be forwarded to St Michael’s Hospice - last year we raised £421 for them. That will give you a an idea how popular an event the Wassail is becoming!. Parking can be a bit of a problem – advise arriving before 7pm or be prepared for a long of a walk !

Saturday 14^th January, 2012 – Wassail at The Fleece, Bretforton, nr. Evesham WR11 7JE. Starts at 6-30pm. Free entry. More Morris sides than ever before alongside Civil War Re-enactors, and of course the traditional singing and mulled cider. Follow the torch lit procession through the apple orchard and enjoy a really festive evening with a folk session to follow and lots of yummy warming food. No parking on site, so be prepared to park in Main Street and walk to the pub.

Let me wish a happy and prosperous and above all musical 2012 to all our players, singers, listeners and lurkers.

We were back in the swing of things on Sunday night at the Rosie and although we were only a select few there was some nice music and we had a good time. Francis was suffering from too much of too many things over too short a time so had to bow out half way through the proceedings but the rest of us filled in and a fair old racket ensued.

Tonight it’s the first 2012 session at the Falcon and I’ll be heading down there in an hour or so. Do come along if you can – I do enjoy the company.

I think Bromyard is lucky to have two such good weekly music sessions so please help keep live music alive by coming along, whether to play or listen, to the Rose and Lion every Sunday evening and/or the Falcon every Tuesday.

Dave’s Carrot

There are many good musical reasons for coming to the live music session at the Rose & Lion in Bromyard on a Sunday evening. Good music from an ever changing array of singers and musicians, covering folk, Irish, bluegrass and much more; the full range of Wye Valley beers in the GBG listed pub; good craic between the players and locals; but now there is something else!

Dave Haig’s carrot! Although this carrot is very large it’s still just a baby, less than a year old, so last Sunday was its first outing. Dave is normally found with his 12-string in one hand and a pint of HPA in the other but this time he was fully occupied holding his great big ‘un. Rumour has it he has a giant pear to go with it!

What will he bring with him tonight? Come along to the Rose & Lion at 8.30pm, 18th December, to find out.

Christmas Session at the Falcon

Just to let you all know (albeit a little last minute) that this coming Tuesday’s session at the Falcon will double up as our Christmas “do” (i.e. 20th December from 8.00pm). We’ll be laying on some nosh and, knowing how much Sylvia tends to provide, will need some serious help in eating it. We’ll try to run the normal sing around format but I guess there could be a fair bit of ensemble singing and noisy nattering too so don’t plan to play your quieter numbers!

It would be great if you could come and if you could give me an idea if you can make it that would help ensure the Falcon only do twice as much food as required.

And if you can’t make it and I don’t bump into you in the next week then let me wish you a real good ‘un for the coming festivities.

Falcon Session In Bromyard

Great fun last night and all a bit surreal to be honest.

At the start of the evening the place was packed by the “Knitters and Natterers”, a friendly group of ladies who, er, well, natter whilst knitting. Several of them stay on for the session and clicking needles can sound quite like bones or spoons if you let your mind wander.

So all you ladies who are torn between knitting Fairisle jumpers and foot-tapping to jigs and reels, do come along and do the both!

There had been some kind of “do” during the day upstairs in the Falcon so we were lucky enough to get the left-overs. Quite a few home baked ham, smoked salmon or eggy butties were dished out but there superabundance of puddings was something to behold.

Highlight of the evening was a world exclusive (or more likely a Bromyard exclusive) of Aly, our exquisite whistle player, singing and playing a borrowed piano accordion. Hope she does more of that in future.

Overall a really enjoyable evening, good and varied music, great camaraderie, sticky puddings and well kept ale.

Every Tuesday – from 8.30pm – free entry – players and listeners most welcome, knitters too but from 6.30pm.
